Meeting Point: 08:30 – Settlers Monument, Grahamstown
08:30 – 09:00: Meet at the Settlers Monument in Grahamstown, where our journey through history begins.
09:00 – 11:00: Depart for Signal Hill on Mountain Drive. As we traverse through the scenic landscape, immerse yourself in a captivating background introduction to the rich history of the region. From the earliest evidence of human habitation to the diverse cultures of the Bushmen/San, the Khoikhoi, and the arrival of the amaXhosa, we delve into the intricacies of their lifestyles and interactions. Explore the narratives of the first European arrivals, from seafarers to Dutch farmers and the later influence of the British. Uncover the conflicts, exchanges, and the transformative journey that has shaped the region into what it is today.
11:00 – 12:30: Depart for the Fish River Game Reserve Complex. Here, amidst the natural beauty, we explore various historic sites including Fort Double Drift, Adams Kranz, and Breakfast Vlei. Delight in a sumptuous picnic lunch by the tranquil banks of the Fish River
12:30 – 15:00: Embark on a scenic journey through the back roads to Peddie. Along the way, we pass the site of the historic Battle of Mgwanga, a pivotal moment marked by one of only three full-blown cavalry charges by the British in Africa. Immerse yourself in the tales of valour and the echoes of history as we traverse through these storied landscapes.
15:00 – Late Afternoon: Return to Grahamstown along the N2 highway, journeying back with a treasure trove of memories and insights garnered throughout the day.
